This integrated technique, commonly referred to as aquaponics, leverages the mutual relationship between aquatic animals and plants. Such systems are highly effective in water recycling, minimise waste generation, and enhance food production within a fully controlled environment.<\/p><p>This blogpost provides a general overview of the development and operational aspects <strong>of the Deir-Alla Pilot of our partner <a href=\"https:\/\/frontagnexus.eu\/fr\/meet-our-team\/national-agricultural-research-centre\/\">National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-079fd03 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"079fd03\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Frontier Agricultural Technologies Implemented<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa36eee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fa36eee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The integration of RAS with hydroponics incorporates advanced technologies that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and productivity. These include the following:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9b25495 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9b25495\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12e3bce elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"12e3bce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This water-efficient approach recycles and filters water continuously. In addition, it includes mechanical filtration to remove solid waste and\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-text ); color: var( --e-global-color-primary ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-b2ce6af-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-b2ce6af-font-size ); font-style: var( --e-global-typography-b2ce6af-font-style ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-b2ce6af-font-weight ); letter-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-b2ce6af-letter-spacing ); text-transform: var( --e-global-typography-b2ce6af-text-transform ); word-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-b2ce6af-word-spacing );\">biological filtration to convert toxic ammonia into plant-usable nitrates. Lastly, it optimises conditions, such as water temperature and oxygenation, for fish health and productivity.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9361803 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9361803\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Hydroponic System<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3eff5b7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3eff5b7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Plants in this system are cultivated in nutrient-rich water rather than soil, obtaining essential nutrients from fish waste, which fosters their growth. Various hydroponic techniques are employed to optimise conditions for different crops, for instance, deep water culture (DWC) and media-based systems, are effective for growing basil and cherry tomatoes. This method enhances plant growth rates while reducing water usage by up to 90% compared to conventional agriculture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a34bd21 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a34bd21\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Automation (to be implemented soon)<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf5fa49 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cf5fa49\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f469883 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f469883\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sensors will soon be installed to continuously monitor key water parameters, such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, allowing for precise control over the aquatic environment. Until then, operations are managed manually. Additionally, automated valves are set to control water flow, which leads to minimising manual labor.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ea12e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3ea12e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Integration<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f56fd67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f56fd67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Electricity for pumps, aeration systems, and automated sensors is supplied by solar panels, reducing dependency on fossil fuels. This system is already applied to the greenhouse hosting the RAS and hydroponics. Additionally, insulated tanks and greenhouse enclosures are used to improve temperature regulation, which further lowers energy consumption.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7fd46d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a7fd46d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Sustainable Practices<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05722ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"05722ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Zero water discharge ensures no environmental impact, aligning with eco-friendly farming practices, such as organic fish feeding and natural pest management . The tanks were covered with dark plastic to prevent algae growth (Figure 2).<\/li><li><strong>Hydroponic Beds<\/strong>: Floating rafts, nutrient film channels, and media-based grow beds were constructed to support a variety of crops (Figure 3).<\/li><li><strong>Filtration System<\/strong>: A multi-stage filtration system was implemented, including sediment filters and biofilters (Figure 4).<\/li><li><strong>Greenhouse<\/strong>: A climate-controlled greenhouse was designed to shield plants and fish from extreme environmental conditions.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1335658 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1335658\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1221d3e elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1221d3e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/frontagnexus.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/elementor\/thumbs\/IMG_3056-scaled-r0btcec7bvqtqrdy5o43ckx4028s9agvzume0osbnk.jpg\" title=\"Figure 2.
