11th Press Release: FrontAg Nexus Concludes Its Journey, Advancing Climate-Smart Agriculture Across the Mediterranean

FrontAg Nexus Concludes Its Journey, Advancing Climate-Smart Agriculture Across the Mediterranean

After 42 months of research, agricultural demonstrations and international collaboration, FrontAg Nexus is reaching the end of its implementation period on 31 October 2026, leaving behind a collection of practical experiences, research findings and resources to support more sustainable agriculture in the Mediterranean.

Launched in May 2023 under the PRIMA Programme, supported by the European Union, the project brought together 10 partners from eight countries, coordinated by Universität der Bundeswehr München (UniBwM), to explore how innovative agricultural practices can address climate change, water scarcity and food-security challenges.

At the heart of FrontAg Nexus was the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus approach: recognising that agricultural production, water availability, energy use and environmental protection are closely interconnected and require integrated solutions.

From Innovative Technologies to Real-World Demonstrations

A central part of FrontAg Nexus involved exploring climate-smart and water-saving agricultural technologies through demonstration cases in Israel, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Türkiye.

These activities brought together different approaches to frontier agriculture, including hydroponics, aquaponics, vertical farming, insect farming, vermiculture and agrophotovoltaics.

Across the demonstration sites, partners explored how these technologies could respond to different agricultural and environmental challenges.

Examples included indoor aquaponics systems integrating nutrient recovery in Israel, controlled-environment cultivation and insect farming in Italy, integrated aquaponics in Jordan, hydroponic production supported by solar energy in Morocco, climate-adaptive cultivation in Tunisia, and agricultural systems combining food production with renewable energy in Türkiye.

Beyond their technological applications, the demonstrations provided opportunities to examine practical implementation conditions, resource requirements and the potential of these approaches in different Mediterranean contexts.

The experiences gathered throughout the project are documented in the FrontAg Nexus Demonstration Case Catalogue, providing a resource for farmers, researchers, innovators and policymakers interested in understanding these agricultural practices and their possible applications.

Connecting Agricultural Innovation with Research and Policy

FrontAg Nexus also explored the broader conditions influencing the adoption of climate-smart agricultural technologies.

Through research on agricultural supply and value chains, socio-economic considerations and WEFE Nexus governance, the project addressed questions extending beyond technical feasibility, including the opportunities and challenges associated with introducing innovative production systems.

Stakeholder engagement activities and policy-oriented discussions helped connect researchers, practitioners and decision-makers around shared challenges in resource management.

These exchanges highlighted the importance of stronger coordination between sectors, more coherent policies and approaches that consider local environmental, economic and institutional conditions.

By bringing together technological experimentation, socio-economic research and stakeholder engagement, FrontAg Nexus contributed to discussions on how agricultural innovation can be better connected with sustainable resource management and policymaking.

Keeping the Knowledge Accessible Beyond the Project

As FrontAg Nexus concludes, an important part of its legacy lies in the knowledge and resources made available to stakeholders beyond the consortium.

The FrontAg Nexus Knowledge Hub provides a central online space where visitors can explore demonstration cases, research publications, practice abstracts and learning resources related to frontier agriculture and the WEFE Nexus.

Alongside the Demonstration Case Catalogue, these resources document the project’s experiences and offer practical reference material for those working on climate-smart agriculture, sustainable food production and resource-efficient technologies.

The platform supports the wider sharing of project knowledge, helping interested stakeholders explore approaches and lessons that may inform future research, agricultural practices and policy discussions.

Looking Beyond FrontAg Nexus

The completion of FrontAg Nexus marks the end of a collaborative research journey, but the challenges it addressed remain highly relevant.

Water scarcity, climate pressures and the need for resilient food production continue to shape agriculture across the Mediterranean. Responding to these challenges requires not only technological innovation but also cooperation between researchers, producers, policymakers and local communities.

Through its demonstration activities, research and knowledge-sharing efforts, FrontAg Nexus has contributed to a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with frontier agriculture in the region.

As the project reaches its conclusion, its experiences and resources provide a foundation for continued learning, collaboration and the exploration of more sustainable agricultural systems.

About FrontAg Nexus

FrontAg Nexus is a research and innovation project supported by the PRIMA Programme, which is supported by the European Union. Implemented from May 2023 to October 2026, the project brought together 10 partners from eight countries to explore climate-smart and water-saving agricultural technologies and their socio-economic and ecological implications for the Mediterranean region.

Through an integrated Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus approach, FrontAg Nexus combined technological innovation, research, policy perspectives and stakeholder engagement to support more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.
