This project is all about making farming work in places where water is scarce and the land is dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-light-green-cyan-color\"><em>What\u2019s Aquaponics?\u00a0<\/em><\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aquaponics is a cool way to farm that combines raising fish (aquaculture) with growing plants without soil (hydroponics). In our system, the water from the fish tanks helps the plants grow, and the plants clean the water for the fish. We can keep a lot of fish in our tank\u2014up to 100 kilograms in just one cubic metre of water!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-light-green-cyan-color\">Turning Waste into Food<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also built a special system that takes the waste from the fish and turns it into food for the plants. This system, called an anaerobic fermentation system, can handle up to 700 litres of fish waste. This means we stack the plants up high to save space and use water more efficiently. We think everything will be up and running smoothly in the next month or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-light-green-cyan-color\">What\u2019s Next?\u00a0<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once everything is connected, our aquaponics system will be fully operational. This project isn\u2019t just about growing fish and plants\u2014it\u2019s about finding new ways to farm in the desert and other tough places around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our demonstration case at BGU is about more than just farming. It\u2019s about finding new ways to make the most of what we have, even in challenging environments like the desert.
