Benguerir, Morocco – The FrontAg Nexus consortium gathered on 12–13 May 2026 for its 3rd General Assembly, hosted by project partner University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Benguerir, Morocco. Bringing together partners both onsite and online, the two-day meeting provided an opportunity to review project progress, exchange knowledge and discuss the next steps towards sustainable and climate-smart agriculture in the Mediterranean.
As the project approaches completion, the General Assembly offered an important opportunity to reflect on the work carried out across the consortium and explore how its outcomes can continue to support more resilient agricultural systems.
Reviewing Progress and Looking Ahead
The first day focused on ongoing project developments, future perspectives and collaborative discussions. Partners exchanged experiences from their respective activities, identifying opportunities to strengthen cooperation and build on the knowledge generated throughout the project.
On the second day, discussions turned to policy perspectives, socio-economic impacts, project coordination, communication and dissemination, with particular attention to the long-term sustainability of project results.
Participants also had the opportunity to explore UM6P’s facilities during a campus visit, complementing the meeting’s discussions with opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange.
Advancing Climate-Smart Agriculture Across the Mediterranean
FrontAg Nexus works to address some of the Mediterranean region’s most pressing agricultural challenges, including climate change, water scarcity, limited arable land, and food insecurity.
Through its Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus approach, the project explores how agricultural production can become more sustainable by considering the connections between natural resources, energy use, food production and environmental protection.
A central part of the project’s work involves demonstration cases across Italy, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Türkiye, exploring climate-smart and resource-efficient agricultural technologies.
These include hydroponics, aquaponics, insect farming, vermiculture and agrophotovoltaics, with the aim of reducing pressure on natural resources while creating opportunities for more resilient food production and improved livelihoods.
Strengthening Collaboration Beyond the Project
The General Assembly also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the knowledge, experiences and results developed through FrontAg Nexus remain accessible and useful beyond the project’s lifetime.
By connecting technological innovation with socio-economic research, policy development and stakeholder engagement, FrontAg Nexus seeks to contribute to more integrated approaches to agricultural sustainability across the Mediterranean.
The meeting in Morocco provided an opportunity for partners to reinforce their shared commitment to these objectives and consider how the project’s work can continue to inform research, practice and decision-making.
